The Organization (1971)
In film you can tell a lot about a thief by the way he or she executes a robbery—the mindlessness of a smash and grab, the desperation in the killing of a hesitant bank teller, the brilliance of getting away with it. From the methodical and prudent heist scene that opens The Organization, we learn that this team of robbers is made up of nerds. After stealing a large amount of heroin from a furniture company that was serving as a front for a major San Francisco drug ring, these nerds get framed for the death of man that worked at the company. Each member of team has had a family member die from either dealing or using dope, and in the great vigilante tradition of the West, they stole the heroin to get back at the kingpins they blame for their loss. Now, in the hope of clearing each of their names, they’ve turned to Sidney Poitier’s Detective Tibbs.
