The Driver (1978)
In “The Driver,” Ryan O’Neal’s title character steers a series of candy-colored cars through the streets, parking garages, and warehouses of Los Angeles as a driver-for-hire for the city’s underworld. His reputation as the area’s finest jockey has not gone unnoticed by a sneering detective played by Bruce Dern—who has it out for the man he calls the “Cowboy.” Dern is so singularly obsessed with apprehending the Driver that he recruits a stickup crew to help set O’Neal up. With the assistance of the beautiful and thick-accented Player, the Driver tries to outmaneuver and outsmart the Detective in a classic game of cat-and-mouse.
