“Straight Time” is based on the book “No Beast So Fierce,” written by a young Edward Bunker while incarcerated at San Quentin. At the time of his conviction, 17-year-old Bunker was the youngest inmate ever to serve time in the state prison. Having spent his childhood bouncing around alcoholic households, foster homes, hobo camps, juvenile detention centers, and military schools, Bunker quickly turned into a hardened criminal. Before San Quentin, he stabbed a man in the showers at Los Angeles County Jail. Bunker would continue with a life of crime and writing, eventually becoming successful enough at the latter to quit the former. “Straight Time” was not his only endeavor in Hollywood. He wrote the screenplay (based on his book) for the Steve Buscemi-directed “Animal Factory”  and landed small roles in “The Running Man,” “Tango & Cash,” and “Reservoir Dogs.” Bunker died in 2005.
